Warren Commission: overview and significance

What happened?

President Lyndon B. Johnson created the Warren Commission in November 1963 under Chief Justice Earl Warren. The Commission gathered testimony and documentary evidence before publishing its report in September 1964.

Why was it important?

The Commission concluded that Lee Harvey Oswald fired the shots that killed Kennedy and that it found no evidence establishing a conspiracy involving Oswald or Jack Ruby. Its methods and conclusions became the central reference point for later debate.
